Chin Implant - Mentoplasty

Mentoplasty is a type of surgery that reshapes the chin and jaw that aims to reduce, increase or correct it. The procedure can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures, such as rhinoplasty, facelift, or neck lift.

Mentoplasty is generally performed for people who want to change their profile for aesthetic purposes or reconstruction.

A chin implant is a procedure in which doctors drill holes through the jawbone and insert titanium screws, rods, plates, or mesh implants to hold the bone together. These implants are used, for example, to repair broken bones, bone deformities, stabilize facial fractures and rebuild jaws after cancer surgery or others.

Types of Mentoplasty

There are 3 types of Mentoplasty procedures:

  • The submental or submandibular approach, is a type of Mentoplasty that is often used to get a more refined chin and jaw.
  • The transoral approach, is a type of Mentoplasty that uses an incision inside the mouth to reshape the chin.
  • The submandibular approach, is a type of Mentoplasty that involves making an incision under the chin to create a more defined jawline and chin.

These types of Mentoplasty can be classified by objectives:

1. Reduction:

Reduction Mentoplasty is a surgical intervention that is performed to reduce the size of the jaw. It is a very safe and effective procedure, which allows to improve the facial appearance and the functioning of the jaw.

2. Increase:

Augmentation Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure used to increase the size and/or improve the shape of the chin. It can be combined with a rhinoplasty to achieve a more natural look. Augmentation Mentoplasty is suitable for patients who want to correct imperfections.

Benefits of Mentoplasty

The benefits of Mentoplasty are extensive, in the case of cosmetic surgery, it helps to get the desired face and with it an increase in self-esteem.

In the case of people who have suffered a facial trauma that has caused their chin to change shape and size, it is the solution for facial reconstruction.

What is the recovery time for Mentoplasty?

The surgery itself lasts one to two hours and is ambulatory, so you can resume your normal activities the next day, as long as the surgeon indicates it this way.

Recovery time for Mentoplasty is four to six weeks and can be shortened by wearing a chin strap for three months after the procedure. Sometimes, patients may need to undergo physical therapy.

Contraindications of Mentoplasty

Mentoplasty is not recommended for people with:

  • Bleeding disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
  • Renal problems
  • Liver problems
  • Pregnant women

If you have any of the above conditions, you should speak with your surgeon to determine if you are a candidate.

Is Mentoplasty painful?

Mentoplasty does not always have to be painful, the discomfort that the patient experiences is usually limited to the day of surgery and is only about inflation, this is because the patient's chin still has to heal.

Mentoplasty can leave scars on the face in some cases, but they are not as noticeable as those left by other types of surgeries.
